History of World War I in Taita Taveta: On August 15, 1914, shortly after war broke out in Europe, German colonial forces (Schutztruppe) crossed the border and captured Taveta. The first shot of the East African land campaign was fired at the Taveta Police Station, killing a German officer. German Occupation & Railway Raids: Taveta remained under German occupation for nearly two years. From strongholds like Salaita Hill and Mwashoti Hill, German forces under Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck launched frequent guerilla raids aimed at blowing up the Uganda Railway—the British Empire’s vital lifeline between Mombasa and Nairobi. British Counter-Offensive (1915–1916): To break the stalemate, the British massed tens of thousands of Indian, South African, British, and Kenyan troops. Led by General Jan Smuts in early 1916, Allied forces launched a major offensive, capturing Salaita Hill and reclaiming Taveta by March 1916, pushing the Germans south into Tanganyika.

The Reign of the Tsavo Lions (March–December 1898) In March 1898, construction reached the Tsavo River in southern Kenya, where workers began erecting a permanent railway bridge under the supervision of British engineer Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson. Shortly after camp was established, a pair of unusually large, maneless male lions began raiding the tents at night: Hunting Tactics: The lions bypassed defensive thorn-bush enclosures (bomas), leaped over campfires, and dragged workers directly from their tents to consume them in the bush. Psychological Terror: The coordinated, persistent nature of the attacks led many workers to believe the lions were supernatural demons (shaitans).
